Canadians who do a lot of online shopping from U.S retailers will be happy to hear that duty-free limits have been increased under the new NAFTA agreement (now called USMCA)
Previously, any online purchase of $20 or more from the U.S. that ships to Canada would be subject to import duties. That limit has now been raised to $150. This is great news for consumers, especially people who purchase items from American sellers on eBay or Amazon.com.
The biggest fear from economist is how this will affect local businesses. Less duties may mean than consumers will purchase from a foreign seller online instead of locally in-store.
The USMCA deal is expected to come in to affect in the second half of 2019. Will you be doing more online U.S. shopping?
