Apparently, nothing says ‘I Don’t love you anymore’ better than placing a call to the anti-fraud TIPS line.
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) reports that February last year was the busies month for TIP calls. While most calls are annonymous, many callers would admit to being an ex-spouse or ex-partner of a person they claim are commiting insurance fraud.
“We can only speculate that emotions of past romantic relationships are triggered by increased talk about Valentine’s Day” said Curtis Wennberg, Chief Operating Officer, Manitoba Public Insurance.
Calls to the TIPS line in February have been increasing every year for the last five years (2015-2019). Overall, 2019 was a record year with a total of 594 calls compared to 439 in 2018 ─ a 35 per cent increase. Those calls saved more than $700,000 in 2019 which saved ratepayers around $50 per year.
Regardless of the month, anyone with information about auto insurance fraud is encouraged to call the Manitoba Public Insurance TIPS Line at 204-985-8477. All calls are anonymous.
