History of the Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup playoffs (1972 to 1996)
The new-era Winnipeg Jets have a relatively short history in the Stanley Cup playoffs since returning to Winnipeg in 2011 after a 15-year absence. However, in their original run from 1972 to 1996, they had a significant playoff history during that time.
From their inaugural season in 1972-73, the original Jets made the playoffs in seven of their first eight seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), winning the Avco World Trophy as league champions three times (in 1976, 1978, and 1979). Notable players during this time included Bobby Hull, Ulf Nilsson, and Anders Hedberg, who formed the famous “Hot Line” for the Jets.
When the WHA folded in 1979, the Jets were one of four teams admitted to the NHL. In their first NHL season, the Jets made the playoffs and advanced to the second round before losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers. The Jets made the playoffs again in 1982, but lost in the first round to the St. Louis Blues.
The Jets’ most successful playoff run came in 1985, when they reached the Smythe Division Final but lost to the Oilers in five games. The team’s roster at the time included Dale Hawerchuk, who was named the NHL’s rookie of the year in 1982 and would go on to become one of the franchise’s most iconic players.
The Jets made the playoffs four more times in the 1980s, but did not advance past the second round. After missing the playoffs in 1990 and 1991, the team made the postseason in its final four seasons in Winnipeg (1992-96), but was unable to advance past the first round.
History of the Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup playoffs (2011 – Current)
When the Jets returned to Winnipeg as the current incarnation of the team in 2011, they failed to make the playoffs in their first three seasons. However, they have since become a regular playoff contender.
The team’s most current playoff run in this era came in 2021. They swept the Oilers 4-0 in round 1, but they lost 4-0 to the Montreal Canadiens in the Conference Semi-Finals.
