The Manitoba government has introduced a bill to make September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a annual statutory holiday.

Premier Wab Kinew stated that giving workers a statutory day off would allow them to remember the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous children.

September 30 is already a holiday for federal workers and in some other provinces, including British Columbia.

Orange Shirt Day

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 is also known as Orange Shirt Day in memory of Phyllis Webstad. Phyllis wore a new orange shirt that was taken away when she arrived at a residential school in 1973 at the age of six.
