Getting a real Christmas tree brings joy and warmth to your holiday celebrations, but once the festivities are over… what should you do with the tree? Fortunately, Winnipeg offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution through the Let’s Chip In program.
From December 27 to January 31, 10 Let’s Chip In locations around Winnipeg will accept Christmas trees. Hours of the sites vary and in some cases are open 24 hours a day.
When delivering your tree to the depot, remember to strip it of all decorations, tinsel, and the stand. The tree should not be in a bag, ensuring a smooth recycling process.
What Happens to Collected Christmas Trees?
Collected Christmas trees are repurposed into wood chip mulch. This sustainable practice allows for the creation of valuable mulch that can be picked up from the temporary depots starting in early January. The mulch is provided free of charge, subject to availability, but you must bring your own container.
Over the past 32 years, an impressive 418,942 Christmas trees have been recycled. This equates to diverting a substantial 1,905 tonnes of material away from landfills. The initiative’s longevity and impact underscore the community’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility.
