Manitoba winters bring deep cold, blowing snow, and roads that can turn slick in seconds. That’s why Manitoba Public Insurance is encouraging drivers to prepare early and take advantage of its Winter Tire Program, a low-interest financing option that makes winter tires more affordable for Manitobans.
With financing of up to $2,000 and terms between one and four years, the program helps residents equip their vehicles with tires designed for the harsh Prairie climate. Since launching in 2014, the program has supported more than 272,000 loans and continues to be a valuable service for drivers who want better traction without a big upfront cost.
Do Winter Tires Really Make a Difference?
Winter tires aren’t just a convenience. They’re proven to reduce collisions! MPI notes that winter tires cut crash rates by 6.3%, and vehicles equipped with them often experience less severe damage in collisions. Many drivers believe all-season tires are enough, but testing shows winter tires stop significantly faster on ice, and even AWD or 4WD vehicles need them for safe braking and cornering. Winter tires maintain flexibility in extreme temperatures, improving grip even at –30°C or –40°C, and should be installed once temperatures consistently stay below +7°C.
How To Apply for the MPI Winter Tire Program
For drivers preparing for the season, applying is simple: visit one of the 655 participating retailers across the province to confirm eligibility and start the financing process. Beyond tires, MPI also offers free 45-minute winter driving presentations for groups of 10 or more, helping Manitobans gain confidence on snowy roads. These sessions are ideal for new residents, young drivers, or anyone wanting a refresher before winter fully settles in.
Staying safe in winter starts even before turning the key. Clearing snow and frost off your vehicle, making sure washer fluid is winter-rated, and checking weather conditions before leaving are easy steps that make a big difference. Once on the road, slowing down, avoiding cruise control, increasing following distance, and staying alert to pedestrians — especially around high snowbanks — can help prevent collisions during slippery conditions. With the right tires and mindful driving habits, Manitobans can navigate winter roads with more confidence and peace of mind.
