Residents across Winnipeg can look forward to a major upgrade in how water usage is tracked and billed, as the City of Winnipeg prepares to roll out smart water meters citywide. Following a successful pilot program, plans are now underway to install automated meters in every property, eliminating the need for most homeowners to manually submit readings.
The new smart meters will automatically transmit water usage data directly to the City. This means more accurate billing based strictly on actual consumption, helping residents avoid estimates or missed readings. Once installed, property owners will only need to provide a manual reading if specifically requested, streamlining what has traditionally been an inconvenient and often overlooked task.
City officials say they are aiming to finalize rollout plans by the end of this year, with installation expected to begin in early 2027. The transition will be a significant undertaking, as approximately 223,000 existing meters across Winnipeg will need to be replaced. The full implementation is expected to take at least four years to complete.
Beyond convenience, the shift to smart meters is expected to improve overall efficiency within the water system. Automated reporting can help identify leaks earlier, reduce administrative work, and ensure billing accuracy across the board. For homeowners, it’s a move toward a more modern, hands-off approach to utility management.
As Winnipeg continues to grow and modernize its infrastructure, the introduction of smart water meters marks a significant step toward a more connected and efficient city. Residents can expect more updates as the rollout timeline is finalized and installation phases are announced.
