A remarkable story with Winnipeg roots unfolded this week at one of golf’s biggest stages, as Sudarshan Yellamaraju surged to a top-10 finish in his debut at The Players Championship.

For many fans, the name might feel like it came out of nowhere. But for those in Winnipeg, it’s a moment worth celebrating.

Yellamaraju was born in India before moving to Winnipeg with his family as a young child. It was here that his journey into golf began by hitting balls alongside his father at a local golf dome. Like many young athletes today, he didn’t rely on elite academies early on. Instead, he turned to YouTube.

Studying swings, practicing relentlessly, and soaking in everything he could, Yellamaraju built his game by watching legends like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Frame by frame, he developed his own approach to ball-striking proving that modern pathways to professional sports are evolving.

At age 11, his family relocated to the Toronto area, where his development continued. Unlike many of his peers, Yellamaraju wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school. Choosing a different route, he skipped college golf altogether and turned professional at just 19.

His climb through the ranks wasn’t instant. After earning status on the Korn Ferry Tour through Q-School in 2024, he faced a challenging rookie season and only narrowly held onto conditional status. But everything changed in 2025.

A win early in the season ignited his campaign, and by year’s end, he had secured his PGA TOUR card by finishing 19th on the Korn Ferry Tour points list… needing every shot on the final day.

Now competing among the world’s best, Yellamaraju is already making an impact. In just his seventh start on the PGA TOUR, he delivered a breakout performance at TPC Sawgrass, showing composure and confidence well beyond his experience.

For young athletes across Manitoba, his story hits differently. From a local golf dome to one of the most iconic tournaments in the sport, Sudarshan Yellamaraju’s rise is just getting started.
