Winnipeg councilors have approved a plan for Target to build a 144,000 square-foot store on the current Canad Inns Stadium site. The store will be a two-storey building with parking on the main floor, and the store on the top level. It will take up 3.2 hectares at the northwest corner of the 10.6-hectare stadium site.
Once the 2012 Bomber season is over (which maybe sooner than later), the city will complete the $30.25-million sale of the site to Polo Park Shopping Centre owner Cadillac Fairview and Shindico Realty.
Nothing is official yet and there are still various steps before Target can move in, such as a traffic-impact study to see how Target will impact the already busy Polo Park area. It could be years before we see construction begin. In the mean time, shoppers can visit Target at Kildonan Place Shopping Centre and Southdale Centre Zellers locations which are expected to be converted into Targets by mid 2013. [WINNIPEG FREE PRESS]
