The purpose of AfriFest is to showcase African and immigrant-owned businesses and artists of African descent in Manitoba. This is a fundraising event in support of menstrual health awareness. Activities will include:
-a curated exhibit of artworks by local artists of African descent;
-vendors from locally run businesses that are owned and operated by persons of African descent and/or immigrants;
-conversation with local business owners and entrepreneurs about what can do to improve the community here in Winnipeg and how we can engage with communities on the African continent;
-presentations around menstrual rights from women of African descent;
-Nhanga (conversation around menstrual rights within a traditional Zimbabwean setting. This is a concept adapted from the idea that girls and women in Zimbabwe would have conversations about life, health, sex and menstruation in the dwelling house for girls called a “Nhanga”. This is based on the Nhanga held every year at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women held in New York; and
performances by local artists
-Kids activities ( bouncy castle, face painting etc.)
