Tchaikovsky’s elegant and romantic Violin Concerto is so beloved, we often forget it was first considered unplayable. But today’s leading violinists master yesterday’s most fiendish difficulties and have made it an evergreen staple to music lovers. We go one further in our concert as soloist Vadim Gluzman will perform on the very Stradivari violin which Tchaikovsky had in mind when writing the work.
In his Sixth Symphony, Shostakovich brilliantly expresses the contradictions of his troubled Soviet world. In the words of one writer: ‘If you want light music, you’re going to get it – and with vengeance’.
