Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!
Cineplex VIP Cinemas
Over the weekend we tried out Winnipeg’s new VIP Theatres. The 18+ movie experience provides a licensed lounge area, completely renovated theatre rooms with large lounge chairs, more foot room and space to eat. Once you settle into your spot, a Cineplex employee takes your order (and payment) right from your seat; there are hot food options, alcoholic beverage options and the usual popcorn options available for purchase. One of the other main perks to this new-style theatre is the ability to choose your seats ahead of time online; no more rush seating! Of course, all of these perks come at a premium; the movie’s admission costs are $17.50 per person and we wanted to see if it was worth it!
The menu features appetizers like Mozza Sticks, Mac & Cheese Wedges and Poutine to name a few. Meal options are things like a Cheeseburger and Fries, or Chicken Strips and Fries, Hot Dogs, etc. The drink selection found on the back of the menu has Martinis, Daiquiris and other mixed drinks. We ordered the Chicken Strips, Mozza Sticks and the Mac & Cheese Wedges.
The Mozza Sticks were actually quite good, and you get a lot of them in one order. The Mac & Cheese wedges were not very impressive at all; something we expected to be rich, cheesy and savoury was mostly bland and crunchy. The Chicken Strips themselves were good, nothing special, but we weren’t expecting a gourmet meal at the movie theatre anyway! The French Fries though, are worth a mention on their own; they’re the perfect mix of crispy and soft and would be great in a poutine! All in all, the food is not fantastic but it makes for a nice greasy meal you might be craving at the movie theatre!
When we first read about this place, we expected the theatre itself to be a bit more over-the-top than it actually is. The seats are larger and more comfortable but they definitely could have allowed for more foot room, considering a server is constantly walking through to take orders and bring out food. You have a small table on the side of your seat for eating, and it’s almost not enough room to comfortably enjoy the meals they offer. However, for only a few dollars more, this theatre is definitely worth it especially if you’re going to see a popular movie that you know will be busy. The ability to reserve your exact seats ahead of time is a huge perk, and being able to settle in and have a server bring out your popcorn and drinks; why not!
