As part of Safways multibillion-dollar sale to Sobeys last year, various Safeway locations around Winnipeg will close it’s doors. The IGA on Maples will also close.
Stores slated for closure:
- Maples IGA on Jefferson Ave
- Safeway on Ness Ave at Sturgeon Rd
- Garden City Safeway on Leila Ave at McPhillips St
- Safeway store Killarney Ave and Pembina Hwy
Each store is expected to close in the fall.
Safeways in Brandon and Steinbach are also on the chopping block.
A year ago, Sobeys acquired Safeway Canada and its 213 stores for $5.8 billion. The Competition Bureau forced Sobeys to sell some stores in Western Canada to avoid neighbourhood monopolies.
This resulted in a four Co-Op grocery stores opening in Winnipeg: Main St, Southdale, St. Vital and Grant Ave. [WINNIPEG FREE PRESS]
