Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!
Jessie’s Kitchen
Jessie’s Kitchen is a very casual, almost cafeteria style Ukrainian eatery in North East Winnipeg. They are located in a large apartment block at 60 Whellams Lane and in order to find this gem, you’ll need to buzz in and follow a maze of hallways and signs.
The space is simple, small and decorated much like someone’s home kitchen; a very welcoming vibe. Their menu features classic Ukrainian favorites as well as some unique entrees with a Ukrainian twist. Top choice would be the platter of 4 perogies, 2 cabbage rolls, cole slaw and a generous helping of kolbassa or meatballs. Other dinner options include Liver & Onions, a Pork Cutlet meal, and a variety of sandwiches.
We ordered the combination plate with a bowl of Borscht to start. Every item on this platter was traditional and satisfying. The hand cut cole slaw with homemade dressing deserves a mention, as this often overlooked side dish really packed a punch. The meatballs were good, but the kolbassa far outshines them as better meat option for this platter.
Also worth a try are the Ukrainian Rueben (made with chunks of kolbassa rather than deli-style meat) and the Potato Pancake Pizza. Jessie’s Kitchen is famous for their potato pancakes and this unique dish is topped with ground beef in tomato sauce, diced tomato, cheese and green onion. Judging by the amount of other customers who had this item on their table, it must be worth a try.
Ukrainian food is comforting and delicious, and the items served at Jessie’s kitchen are no exception. Most of our city’s Ukrainian eateries have take-out or catering style menus rather than sit-down dining, so that makes Jessie’s Kitchen a great place to visit if you’re craving a meal like this!
