Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!
Little Maria’s Porchetta & Meatballs
Little Maria’s Porchetta & Meatballs is an Italian eatery in downtown Winnipeg. They recently opened on Edmonton Street, at the site of some other failed restaurants. A large and captivating sign, with a self-explanatory name will allow downtown patrons to make no mistake when passing by; there is a new restaurant on the block and it is definitely worth a visit.
Their menu starts with a few pasta options, some soup choices and a section of bruschettas and breads. The bread at Little Maria’s is delicious on its own, so the bruschetta or garlic cheese toast would each be a hit. The remainder of the menu is made up of sandwiches and entrees all centered on their meatballs and porchetta. Layers of pork meat, fat, skin and seasoned stuffing are stacked and slow-roasted to make this traditional Italian fare (which is pronounced pork-ketta, as the menu is sure to clarify).

Some sandwich choices include The Little Maria (mushrooms, roasted peppers, garlic spinach, tomato, balsamic sprinkle), The Pauly (spicy eggplant, roasted zucchini, garlic spinach, tomato, feta), The Sinatra (porchetta, salami, provolone, roasted peppers, garlic spinach) and the El Porko (porchetta, meatballs, mozzarella). Sandwiches in the Go Big or Little Mini’s section of the menu offer something for those with larger or smaller appetites. Meatball or Porchetta entrees are also available in combination-style, where diners choose their meat, sauce and a side to create a meal.
We tried The Sinatra and The El Porko with spicy eggplant added to it. These sandwiches were outstanding combinations of flavors and fresh ingredients; definitely something to crave and go back for. Although you can buy a sandwich for lunch downtown almost anywhere, there is nothing typical or ordinary about these sandwiches and we highly recommend you check out Little Maria’s!
