The city has announced that a portion of Bonnycastle Park on Assiniboine Avenue will be Winnipeg’s Downtown off-leash dog park.
“The selection of Bonnycastle Park brings us one step closer to the fulfillment of my commitment to open a fenced in, off-leash dog park in Downtown Winnipeg,” Mayor Brian Bowman said. “It’s exciting to see the amenities in Downtown Winnipeg beginning to take shape and resemble other areas of Winnipeg. This is a major step towards that goal and the continued revitalization of our Downtown.”
The 0.15 hectare park will have a perimeter fence along as well as an internal fence to separate small dogs from larger dogs.
The park will include dog “furniture”/agility elements, lights, signage, park furniture for people, and waste receptacles. A granular path along the interior of the fence and tree and shrub planting around the edge of the new off-leash enclosure will complete the design.
Here’s a concept drawing of the new park. Construction will begin once a contractor is selected.
