Winnipeg’s will finally ban smoking on patios starting Sunday, April 1, 2018.
Winnipeg is the last major Canadian city to implement the patio smoking ban. The ban will include cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, water pipes, hookahs and “similar products/devices” on outdoor patios where food or drinks are served.
A random telephone survey of 600 adults found that 76% of citizens supported a patio smoking ban at restaurants and 58% supported a ban at bars.
Bars can continue to allow smoking in outdoor areas on private property but they must be permanent areas where no food or drinks are served.
Smokers caught breaking the law can be fined up to $200. The business will also be fined up to $400 for allowing smoking on patios where food or drinks are served.
