From a Three-Game Series to One Championship Game
This year’s CEBL Finals were originally supposed to look very different.
For the first time in league history, the CEBL introduced a best-of-three championship series, with the Brampton Honey Badgers hosting Game 1 and the remaining potential games scheduled in Winnipeg.
But Game 1 in Brampton didn’t even make it through the first quarter.
The August 12 game at the CAA Centre was stopped after condensation developed on the playing surface, creating unsafe conditions for the players. Winnipeg guard Xavier Moon was among the players who visibly slipped on the court. The game was eventually cancelled with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter, with the score tied 6-6.
Rather than attempt to continue the three-game series, the CEBL announced that the championship would instead be decided by one winner-take-all game in Winnipeg.
The change also brings the CEBL Finals back to the format used from 2019 through 2025, when the league championship was decided by a single game.
Sea Bears Playing for Their First CEBL Championship
The stakes couldn’t be higher for Winnipeg.
The Sea Bears are appearing in the CEBL Finals for the first time in franchise history, giving the team an opportunity to win its first league championship in front of a home crowd at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.
Instead of potentially having Games 2 and 3 to determine the champion, everything now comes down to one afternoon of basketball.
