Saw this pretty discouraging Sun article about a scam that ran for five years and cost MPI around $800,000. In case you’re worried you may have to pass a pop quiz about this story but don’t have time to read the article, I’ll give you the CliffsNotes version:
1: The suspects bought luxury vehicles elsewhere and brought them into Manitoba.
2: With the help of staff at two garages, they rolled back the odometers to increase their value and doctored sales certificates.
3: With the stage set all they had to do was orchestrate some hit and runs/falsely report them stolen and then collect their payouts.
The scam came to light when an adjuster recently noticed enough of these suspicious claims to alert the MPI special investigation unit.
