Surveillance Cameras On Winnipeg Streets Originally uploaded by AccessWinnipeg

This Monday, a city committee meeting brought up the news that Winnipeg could have surveillance cameras up as early as 2009. Apparently using Toronto as an example, Winnipeg would have come up with it’s own way to budget this new crime fighting (deterrent?) method. Toronto setup 22 cameras. This cost 2 million dollars and this doesn’t even pay for any monitoring or any Police involvement.

According to the CBC, Winnipeg seems to be in support of the idea. All the surveys were very simple and straight forward and people voted the cameras favorable. I really don’t know how I feel about the idea. Other than a money sink for the city, it really sounds like this could stop a lot of crime before happening. Sam Katz is down with it, how do you feel?
