Polar Bear Sleeping Originally uploaded by marttj
The only polar bear in the Assiniboine Zoo, Debbie, is not doing too well. She’s the oldest polar bear in the world, but Bob Wrigly, the zoo curator, says she won’t live to see 42. Debbie has lived in her exhibit since 1967.
Unfortunately, this exhibit is no longer up to Manitoba Conservation standards, so the zoo won’t be able to bring in another polar bear. This also means, that Manitoba’s title of “Polar Bear Capital of the world” will no longer be, at least for another 10 to 15 years.
Once Debbie passes away, a fundraising effort will be made to raise money to build a new facility to house another polar bear.
