Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!

After driving by it numerous times and seeing it featured on TV, we were excited to finally try this place out ourselves.
Immediately upon walking into Red Top, you can see that they’ve held on to their nostalgic décor, it’s almost as if you’ve stepped back in time, and the friendly service seems to match this philosophy. They serve exactly what you’d expect from this type of place; a variety of burgers and hot dogs, homemade fries and salads. But they also have a breakfast menu and a section of larger dinners like spaghetti or veal cutlets. Gyros also have their own place on the menu but it was the fried chicken dinner we keep hearing about that we came for!

This meal was worth the wait; the breading on the chicken is crispy, not greasy and has just enough salt to be tasty but not overdone. A generous serving of homemade fries and coleslaw, along with a side of toast accompanied this huge meal. At first, the toast seemed like an unlikely side but it went really well after a few bites.
We also ordered a chocolate milkshake, and of course, it was delicious! Red Top’s burgers, fries and hot dogs are probably on par with some other locally-owned diners but the breakfast menu and larger dinners set them apart and give more options if you’re not in the mood for a burger. We’ll definitely be returning to the Red Top Drive Inn, to try out the rest of the menu!
