Samsung drew first blood in the new wearable technology category by introducing its new Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. The watch will pair with existing Samsung Galaxy devices (cellphone, tablet) to give you a new user experience on your wrist. Apple has been rumoured to be working on a similar watch for iOS devices.
The centerpiece of the Galaxy Gear is a 320 x 320-pixel, 1.63-inch AMOLED touchscreen display. There’s a speaker and a pair of mics for recording and playing back audio. You can also make phone calls from the watch. For photographers, it has an autofocus lens mounted in the wrist strap for capturing 1.9-megapixel stills and 10-second video clips at 720p with sound.
The watch will come preloaded with a bunch of apps and various watch faces. It ships in October for the hefty price of $299.
