The Public Utilities Board (PUB) has approved a 3.36% increase to Manitoba Hydro rates effective August 1, 2016.

Hydro originally requested a 3.95% increase, but that was shut down by the PUB. The main reason for the rate increase is to pay off very large capital investments that Hydro has made to meet growing energy requirements of Manitoba.

These investments include replacing aging utility assets and addressing increased capacity needs on the system. The investments have double Hydro’s assets and associated costs.

The average customer (using 1,000 kWh/month) will now pay around $2.83 more a month. A customer who uses electric heating (2,000 kWh/month) will pay around $5.41 more a month.
