City Council has passed a bylaw that will ban smoking or vaping on Winnipeg patios starting April 1, 2018. The ban defines patios as an outdoor area where food and alcohol is served.
Winnipeg is the last major Canadian city to establish a patio smoking ban. The ban includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, water pipes, hookahs and “similar products/devices” on outdoor patios where food or drinks are served.
The bylaw will also prohibit cannabis from being smoked on patios. Recreational cannabis will become legal in Canada on July 1, 2018, just a couple months after the patio smoking ban is implemented.
Bars can continue to allow smoking in outdoor areas on private property but they must be permanent areas where no food or drinks are served.
