Today Is The First Day of Spring, And It Sure Feels Like It

March 20, 2019 brings the Spring Equinox, or as we all know it, the first day of Spring. We’ve had an amazing melt so far and Winnipeg sure looks like the ‘slush’ capital of the world.

However, here are a few things to remember:

  • Hold off on wearing any white shoes, its going to be slushy out there!
  • If the city missed it, clear out drainage/catch basins on your street
  • Check your windshield washer fluid and top it off
  • Spread our snow throughout your yard to assist in an even melt
  • Take caution around thin ice
  • Watch out for falling snow/icicles from roof tops

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth’s equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.
