McDonald’s Canada is bringing back pizza… but not quite in the way you might remember. Starting Tuesday, June 24, 2025, McDonalds will launch Pizza Bites, a new snack-sized offering that brings a modern twist to the fan-favourite McPizza. These bite-sized pockets are packed with melty cheese, zesty tomato sauce, and classic pepperoni flavours, all wrapped in a golden, crispy crust perfect for dipping and sharing.
While you may remember the full-size McPizza of the 1990s, this new version isn’t a direct revival. Instead, it’s a reimagined, snack-friendly option designed to appeal to today’s on-the-go diners. Pizza Bites will be available for a limited time at participating locations in Canada.
McPizza, an Iconic McDonalds Canada Menu Item in the 1990s
McDonald’s first experimented with pizza in the late 1970s in test-market stores near Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. These early versions were small, personal-sized pizzas designed for convenience rather than sit‑down meals.
By the late 1980s, including around 1989, McDonald’s scaled up the concept with family-sized pies served in select U.S. locations like Evansville, Indiana and Owensboro, Kentucky.
In Canada, McDonald’s rolled out McPizza around 1992, offering both family-size and later personal-size pizzas across hundreds of outlets, including right here in Winnipeg. The Canadian version was initially delivered to tables on raised racks before becoming more compact.
What Are McDonalds Pizza Bites?
McDonald’s first tested small, handheld pizza pockets in restaurants in Germany under the name Pizzataschen. They are available in 3‑ and 5‑piece orders. They’re a convenient, fully sealed pizza snack, which are perfect for on-the-go diners. Similar to burgers and fries, pizza bites focus on convenience with out the mess of sliced personal sized pizzas.
The launch of Pizza Bites is part of McDonald’s continued push to experiment with bold new menu items while tapping into Canadian customers’ love for comfort food.
