David Jonsson Cast as Prince T’Challa II in Black Panther 3 After Filming The Long Walk in Manitoba

British actor David Jonsson is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in one of the franchise’s biggest roles yet, but many Manitobans may recognize him from a much more recent project filmed right here in the province.

Marvel Studios officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Jonsson has been cast as Prince T’Challa II, the adult son of King T’Challa, in Black Panther 3. The highly anticipated sequel is scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 15, 2028, with Ryan Coogler returning to direct and Letitia Wright and Winston Duke reprising their roles.

From Manitoba to Marvel

Before landing one of Marvel’s most prestigious superhero roles, David Jonsson was filming The Long Walk across southern Manitoba.

Production brought cast and crew to Birds Hill Provincial Park, while several scenes were also shot along rural roads near Poplar Point, just west of Winnipeg. The province once again transformed into a convincing stand-in for the film’s setting, continuing Manitoba’s reputation as a popular destination for major Hollywood productions.

Moviegoers in Winnipeg may remember seeing reports of road closures, production vehicles, and large film crews during filming, which generated plenty of excitement among local residents eager to catch a glimpse of the production.

Taking Up the Black Panther Legacy

Jonsson will portray Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa, a character who was first introduced as a young child during the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Rather than recasting Chadwick Boseman’s beloved character, Marvel has chosen to move the story forward by focusing on T’Challa’s son as the next generation of Wakanda’s protector. The upcoming film is expected to follow his journey into adulthood and his path toward becoming the new Black Panther.

The casting marks another major milestone in Jonsson’s rapidly rising career following acclaimed performances in Industry, Alien: Romulus, and The Long Walk.
