The end of an era has arrived for toy shoppers in Manitoba. The final two Toys “R” Us locations in Winnipeg, Polo Park and Regent, are now officially liquidating, giving shoppers one last chance to browse the iconic toy retailer before both stores permanently close.
While no official closing date has been announced, liquidation sales are already underway at both stores. As with most store liquidation events, discounts are expected to increase over time as inventory is cleared. However, waiting for deeper discounts also means shoppers risk missing out on the most popular toys, collectibles, LEGO sets, board games, and baby products.
Why Are the Winnipeg Toys “R” Us Stores Closing?
The closures are part of the ongoing restructuring of Toys “R” Us Canada after the company sought creditor protection earlier this year under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). Court documents showed the retailer faced significant financial pressure, including millions of dollars owed to landlords and suppliers. As part of its restructuring efforts, the company began reducing its store footprint across Canada while exploring a sale of the business or its remaining assets.
Like many traditional toy retailers, Toys “R” Us has also faced years of increasing competition from online shopping, Amazon, Walmart, Costco, and other retailers that have expanded their toy selections. Large-format stores with high operating costs have become increasingly difficult to sustain as more consumers shop online.
Back in January, signs announcing the store’s closure appeared at the St. Matthews Avenue location. Those notices were later removed after the company temporarily reversed course and kept the store operating while restructuring plans continued. Now, liquidation signs have returned, making this closure appear to be final.
The Regent location is also now winding down, meaning Winnipeg will soon lose its final Toys “R” Us stores.
