The Winnipeg Sea Bears’ 2026 CEBL Finals game against the Brampton Honey Badgers has been cancelled after condensation left the court unsafe for play. The cancellation means the best-of-three CEBL Finals series has been scrapped, with the championship now being decided in a single winner-take-all game in Winnipeg.
Game 1 was being played Wednesday, August 12, at the CAA Centre in Brampton when the game was stopped with 8 minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The score was tied 6-6 at the time.
The unsafe court conditions became apparent early in the game. Winnipeg Sea Bears guard Xavier Moon was defending a drive when he visibly slipped multiple times on the damp playing surface.
The CEBL initially announced a 20-minute delay as officials and venue staff assessed the court conditions. However, after the delay, the league ultimately made the decision to cancel the game rather than risk the safety of the players, officials and fans.
In its official statement, the CEBL said:
“Following the cancellation of Game 1 of the 2026 CEBL Finals due to condensation on the court in Brampton, the Canadian Elite Basketball League has confirmed that the Finals will be decided in a single championship game.
The Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers will meet for the 2026 CEBL Championship on Saturday, August 15 at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, the previously scheduled date and host venue for Game 2. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. CDT / 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast on CBC, TSN, TSN+, CBC Gem and CEBL+.
The decision was made by the League in consultation with both clubs. With the best-of-three series unable to be completed within the scheduled window, a one-game championship was determined to be the fairest and most practical path to crowning a champion. It also returns the Finals to the format used from 2019 through 2025, when the CEBL Champion was decided in a single Championship Game.
Additional ticketing details will be shared by the Winnipeg Sea Bears.
Fans who held tickets to Game 1 in Brampton will be refunded as previously announced.

CEBL Finals Format Changed to One Game
Immediately following the cancellation, the CEBL announced a major change to the Finals format. Rather than attempting to complete the best-of-three series, the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers will now play a single championship game to determine the 2026 CEBL champion.
The winner-take-all championship game will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, which was already scheduled to host Game 2 of the Finals.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CDT (3:30 p.m. ET).
The championship game will be broadcast on YouTube, CBC, TSN, TSN+, CBC Gem and CEBL+.
According to the league, the decision was made in consultation with both clubs. Because the best-of-three series could no longer be completed within the scheduled Finals window, the CEBL determined that a one-game championship was the fairest and most practical way to crown a champion.
The format also returns the CEBL Finals to the structure used from 2019 through 2025, when the league champion was determined by a single Championship Game.
Winnipeg Now Has Home-Court Advantage in Championship Game
The change gives the Winnipeg Sea Bears a significant opportunity in front of their home fans. Instead of potentially needing to travel back to Brampton for a deciding Game 3, Winnipeg will host the only game that now matters for the 2026 CEBL championship.
The Sea Bears and Honey Badgers will have three days to prepare for the winner-take-all matchup after Wednesday’s game was abandoned.
The unusual circumstances mean the championship will ultimately come down to just 40 minutes of basketball at Canada Life Centre.
