History of Thanksgiving
The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving can be traced to European settlers in what is now Canada. French settlers who arrived in New France in the early 17th century celebrated successful harvests, with explorer Samuel de Champlain proposing the Order of Good Cheer in 1606 to help maintain morale during the winter.
As more settlers arrived, harvest celebrations incorporated traditions from different European communities. Some Thanksgiving traditions familiar today, including turkey dinners, were influenced by United Empire Loyalists who moved to Canada following the American Revolution.
Canadian Thanksgiving is now celebrated on the second Monday in October, giving many Canadians an opportunity to gather with family and friends and enjoy the fall harvest.
