Calgary Is Closing In on Winnipeg’s 20-Year Reign as the Slurpee Capital of the World

Published

Winnipeg has proudly worn the title of Slurpee Capital of the World for more than two decades, but that legendary streak may soon come to an end.

According to 7-Eleven Canada, Calgary is now “knocking right on the door” and is getting close to overtaking Winnipeg as the world’s biggest Slurpee market on a per-capita basis. If current trends continue, the city that has become synonymous with frozen drinks could lose the crown.

How Winnipeg Became the Slurpee Capital of the World

Winnipeg first earned the title of Slurpee Capital of the World in 1999 and has successfully defended it every year since. That means the city has now held the crown for more than 20 consecutive years, becoming one of the most recognizable parts of Winnipeg’s identity.

The title has become so iconic that in 2018, a section of Rouge Road near one of the city’s highest-selling 7-Eleven locations was officially renamed “Slurpee Way” in honour of Winnipeg’s frozen beverage obsession.

Even today, 7-Eleven’s official website still proudly recognizes Winnipeg as the Slurpee Capital of the World.

How Is the Slurpee Capital Determined?

Many people assume the winner is simply the city that sells the most Slurpees, but that’s not how the competition works.

The title is awarded based on per-capita sales. That means 7-Eleven looks at how many Slurpees are sold relative to the city’s population, rather than total sales alone.

This system has allowed Winnipeg to consistently outperform much larger cities around the world despite having a population of under one million people. Year after year, Winnipeggers have purchased more Slurpees per resident than anywhere else on the planet.

Historic Slurpee Sales in Winnipeg

Winnipeg’s Slurpee numbers have been impressive for decades.

Historically, 7-Eleven has reported:

  • Winnipeg averages nearly 190,000 Slurpees sold every month across the city.
  • Earlier reports showed approximately 188,000 monthly Slurpee sales in Winnipeg.
  • In Manitoba, individual 7-Eleven stores have averaged roughly 8,300 Slurpees sold per month.

Those numbers have helped Winnipeg maintain its long-standing dominance over every other city in the 7-Eleven network.

Why Calgary Is Catching Up

According to 7-Eleven Canada Vice-President and General Manager Marc Goodman, Calgary has become the company’s second-largest Slurpee market and is now very close to challenging Winnipeg for the title. He even urged Winnipeggers to visit stores more often to help defend the city’s championship.

One major factor working against Winnipeg has been the closure of numerous 7-Eleven locations throughout the city.

Over the past year, multiple Winnipeg stores have permanently closed due to ongoing theft, safety concerns and operational challenges. Reports indicate that at least eight locations have shut down after 7-Eleven previously warned that several stores were at risk. Fewer stores naturally mean fewer opportunities for customers to purchase Slurpees, which could significantly affect per-capita sales.

Calgary, meanwhile, has continued to grow rapidly. With a booming population and expanding convenience store market, the city has steadily narrowed the gap while maintaining strong Slurpee sales.

Can Winnipeg Hold Onto the Crown?

Despite the growing pressure, Winnipeg remains the official Slurpee Capital of the World for now.

The title has become more than just a marketing slogan. It has become a point of civic pride, proving that Winnipeggers enjoy frozen treats in every season, even during some of Canada’s coldest winters.

If Winnipeg hopes to extend its incredible championship streak beyond two decades, residents may need to make a few extra Slurpee runs before Calgary claims the crown.
