Winnipeg voters will head to the polls on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, for the 2026 Municipal Council and School Boards Election.
The election will give eligible Winnipeg voters the opportunity to vote for Mayor, their local City Councillor and a School Trustee for their school division. The City of Winnipeg says the election will determine Winnipeg’s municipal council for the next four-year term, while school trustees will be elected for the six school divisions within the city.
There are 12 candidates running for Mayor of Winnipeg in 2026. The mayor is elected city-wide, while one councillor is elected from each of Winnipeg’s 15 council wards.
When is the 2026 Winnipeg election?
Election Day is Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Voting locations on Election Day will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters will cast ballots for Mayor, City Councillor and School Trustee.
Advance voting is also available before Election Day. The City of Winnipeg’s advance voting schedule runs from October 5 through October 23, with voting available at City Hall, shopping malls, community locations and other designated locations.
Unlike Election Day, eligible voters can use any advance voting location in Winnipeg. On Election Day, voters must vote at a location in their council ward.
Who can vote in the Winnipeg municipal election?
To vote for Mayor and City Councillor, a person must be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years old on October 28, 2026, and have been a resident of Winnipeg or a property owner in the city since April 28, 2026.
School Trustee eligibility has additional requirements. Voters must be Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years old and have been actual residents of the applicable school division for at least six months, as well as residents of the school division ward on Election Day.
Everyone voting must provide identification showing their name and current address. This can be done with one government-issued photo ID showing both, or with two authorized pieces of identification that together establish the voter’s name and current address.

The City of Winnipeg recommends that residents check the voters list before Election Day to make sure their information is up to date. The City says there are more than 525,000 names on the voters list.

Candidates for School Trustee
Winnipeg’s municipal election also includes elections for school trustees in the city’s six school divisions: Louis Riel School Division, Pembina Trails School Division, River East Transcona School Division, Seven Oaks School Division, St. James-Assiniboia School Division and Winnipeg School Division.
The number of candidates and available trustee positions varies by school division and ward. Some trustee positions have been acclaimed, meaning there is no contested election for that position.
