Hello Winnipeg, we are Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant. We’re passionate about food, but not about cooking. After growing tired of everyday chain restaurants, we began our search for the best hidden eateries the city has to offer. Ever wonder if that trendy new place is worth the money; or if that greasy burger joint lives up to all the hype? Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Restaurant!

A holiday function brought us there for our first time, and after hearing very mixed opinions about this place, we were excited to try it out.
The atmosphere was nice for a casual group function and the pub-themed décor feels very authentic and true to the style they’re going for. One downfall we noticed were the lack of washrooms in the restaurant itself; you have to go through the Delta’s lobby to find the nearest washroom.
The menu features a classic mix of popular English fare like Shepherd’s Pie, Bangers & Mash or a Ploughman’s Platter along with many sandwiches, burgers and salads to choose from as well. We’ve heard great things about Elephant & Castle’s nachos, but decided to try the Bruschetta and Spinach Dip as appetizers on this visit. The appetizers were really good; the Bruschetta was topped generously with fresh tomatoes and cheese; while the Spinach Dip was very hearty, with a cream cheese base and plenty of artichokes for texture.
For our mains, we went with the Roast Beef Stuffed Yorkshire, which is a Yorkshire pudding, opened and stuffed with roast beef, caramelized onions and gravy. It also came with mashed potatoes and green beans on the side. This was a very unique dish and it was quite enjoyable. We also tried the Jameson’s Chicken, which came out in a skillet and topped with whiskey-mushroom gravy. The waitress mentioned the gravy being so popular, that patrons often request the kitchen makes it into a stew that can be ordered on its own! It was very good, and more of it would have been nice since the mashed potatoes seemed a little dry on their own.
Overall, the Elephant & Castle is a great place to go with a group of friends. We probably won’t be running back for just a dinner but would definitely recommend this place for drinks and appetizers!
