It’s that time of year, Winnipeg! The snow has finally retreated, leaving behind the usual winter leftovers of sand, salt, and debris. The citywide spring cleanup is officially in full swing.
Over the next six weeks, a massive team of 500 workers and over 300 pieces of equipment will be hitting every corner of the city. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the “Big Sweep” safely and help our crews do their best work.
New for 2026: The “Downtown Detailers”
If you spend time in the city’s core, you’re going to notice some extra TLC this season. The city has deployed four dedicated crews specifically focused on sprucing up Downtown and the Exchange District.
According to Michael Cantor, Manager of Streets Maintenance, this isn’t just about sweeping. These “Downtown Detailers” are going the extra mile by:
- Wiping out graffiti in partnership with local BIZ groups.
- Refreshing signage that’s been damaged or faded by the elements.
- Pressure-washing park equipment and public spaces.
- Hand-sweeping debris in hard-to-reach corners.
Safety Around Heavy Cleaning Machinery
With 300 pieces of heavy machinery roaming our streets, safety is the top priority. These machines are big, loud, and have significant blind spots.
- The 3-Car Rule: Always stay at least 15 metres (three car lengths) back. Crews often reverse or stop suddenly to make multiple passes over the same patch of grit.
- Eye Contact is Key: If you’re stuck behind a sweeper, don’t try to zip around them. Wait until the operator makes eye contact and waves you through.
- Watch the Kids: Keep children and pets well away from the curb when heavy machinery is approaching.
Help Ensure Your Street Gets Cleaned Properly
To ensure your street gets the best possible cleaning, there are a few things you can do to help the process along:
- Park Smart
Nothing ruins a clean street like a “dirt island” left behind by a parked car.- Major Routes: Keep a sharp eye out for temporary no parking signs. If you park in a restricted zone, you’re looking at a ticket and a trip to the impound lot.
- Residential Streets: Check the cleaning schedule online and try to find alternative parking for the day your street is scheduled.
- Clear the Curb
Check your property line for obstacles. Basketball hoops, hockey nets, and even low-hanging branches can snag equipment. If it’s near the curb, move it back. - Manage Your Bins
If it’s garbage day and the sweepers are coming, try to pull your bins back onto your property as soon as they’ve been emptied. A clear curb means a cleaner street for everyone.
