Netflix is getting cheaper… as long as you’re willing to watch some commercials. The ad-supported membership tier will launch in Canada on November 1 and will cost $5.99/month.

Most of Netflix’s catalogue will be available in the Basic with Ads plan, however, a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions.

How many ads are on the new Netflix plan? There will be an average of four to five minutes of ads displayed per hour of streaming. They’ll also play both before and during a movie or TV show. Each ad will last for 15 or 30 seconds before you can skip through.

Below is an example of a Netflix ad:

Differences between ‘Basic with Ads’ plan and other Netflix plans:

  • an average of four to five minutes of ads displayed per hour of streaming
  • only supports up to 720p (HD) streaming quality
  • no option to download content
  • can only stream on one screen at the same time
  • a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions

How much do Netflix plans cost in Canada?

  • Netflix Basic with Ads – $5.99/month
  • Netflix Basic – $9.99/month (No ads. Stream up to 720p and can only stream on one screen at the same time)
  • Netflix Standard – $16.49/month (No ads. Stream up to 1080p and can stream on up to two screens at the same time)
  • Netflix Premium – $20.99/month (No ads. Stream up to Ultra HD (4K HDR) and can stream on up to four screens at the same time)

Netflix is also testing a ‘paywall for password sharing’ in a few international markets. It’s estimated that more than 100 million households are sharing passwords, including 30 million in the U.S. and Canada. There’s no news on when the password sharing paywall will hit Canada.
