A Walmart Supercentre will be the first tenant at the new Grant Park Pavilions being built at the corner of Pembina Highway and Taylor Avenue.

Construction on the 160,000-square-foot Walmart location will begin mid May and is expected to open January 2015. It will be the 7th Walmart in Winnipeg and will service River Heights, Fort Rouge and even downtown Winnipeg.

The 24.2-hectare Grant Park Pavilions site will include large-format retail, smaller retail, restaurants, office space, apartments and possibly senior housing.

There will also be 18 pathways for bikes, pedestrians and buses.

The Grant Park Pavilions project is expected to cost $200 million and will create more than 1,260 jobs.

Over a decade ago, Walmart had a location in Grant Park Mall which was closed when the Kenaston and Polo Park Walmarts were developed. That space is now occupied by Target (formerly Zellers).
