Canada Day is once again a long weekend this year! There will be plenty to do throughout the city however shoppers might find this Canada Day a bit frustrating. Due to an archaic law, stores will be open on Sunday, July 1, but closed on Monday, July 2.

Here’s some assistance planning out your activities. Nothing’s worse then heading somewhere and finding out it’s closed, so make sure to read the what’s open and what’s closed list carefully.

Winnipeg Transit


On Sunday, July 1, Winnipeg Transit will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule.

Special Canada Day service includes:

  • FREE Canada Day Shuttle will operate between The Forks and Osborne Village from noon until 12 a.m.
  • Extra service on Portage Avenue buses will be operating between The Forks and Assiniboine Park from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Regular transit fares apply.

On Monday, July 2, Winnipeg Transit will operate on a modified weekday schedule. Super-Express routes will not be running. Those routes include:

  • 25 Ness Super Express
  • 34 McPhillips Super Express
  • 35 Maples Super Express
  • 36 Northwest Super Express
  • 137 Richmond Super Express
  • 161 University Super Express

Leisure Centres

The Fort Rouge Leisure Centre, St. James Civic Centre, Freight House, Mayfair Recreation Centre, Peguis Trail Health & Fitness Centre, Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre and Sergeant Tommy Prince Place will be closed on Sunday, July 1 and will be open on Monday, July 2. Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre will be open for the Wading Pool only on July 2.

All other Leisure Centres will be closed on Monday, July 2. Regular hours of operation resume on Tuesday, July 3.

Swimming Pools

Indoor Pools

All City of Winnipeg indoor swimming pools will be closed on Sunday, July 1.

Outdoor Pools

Weather permitting, all City of Winnipeg outdoor pools will be open Sunday, July 1. Operating hours vary by pool.

Wading Pools

Weather permitting; the following 8 wading pools will be open on Sunday, July 1:

Central Park Dakota Park
Machray Park Shaughnessy Park
Sturgeon Heights CC Vimy Ridge Memorial Park
West Kildonan Memorial CC Westdale

The remaining locations will open Monday, July 2, according to their operating schedules. Operating hours vary by wading pool; however, most are open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Spray Pads
Spray pads will be open on Sunday, July 1 and include the following locations:

Central Park Central Corydon – River Heights
Fort Rouge Gateway
Jill Officer Park Lindenwood
Lindsey Wilson Park Machray Park
Park City West Provencher Park
St. James Assiniboia Centennial Pool St. Norbert

Operating hours for spray pads are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Library Services


All Winnipeg Public Libraries will be closed on Sunday, July 1 and Monday, July 2.

Animal Services Agency

The Animal Services Agency will be closed on Sunday, July 1. It will be open with reduced hours (12 p.m. to 5 p.m.) on Monday, July 2, 2018.

Cemeteries

Cemetery grounds at Brookside, St. Vital, and Transcona Cemeteries will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. during the Canada Day long weekend, including July 1.

Cemetery offices will be closed on Monday, July 2.

Winnipeg Parking Authority

Saturday, June 30 Closed

Tuesday, July 3 Regular hours – 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Golf Courses

All Municipal Golf Courses will be open every day during the Canada Day long weekend from dawn until dusk, 6 a.m. to sundown.
