After 40 years (opened August of 1970), the Cineplex/Famous Players owned Garden City Cinemas will be closing it’s doors for good.

The two-screen cinema will be playing their last movies Thursday night, Inception and Punjabi film Mel Karrade Rabba.

The lease on the location currently expired and Cineplex decided not to renew it. Instead they will service Garden City residents with their Cinema City theatre located at North Gate Shopping Centre. Cinema City plays older movies at a cheaper price. Garden City residents who want to watch bigger named titles will have to head to Silver City Polo Park.

This theatre brings back a lot of memories for me. Before the big Silver City locations opened this was the theatre of choice. I remember lining up for Titanic at this theatre and lines would wrap around the building. Lately those line ups don’t exist any more and they have focused on playing some foreign titles to attract the Filipino and Punjabi community in the GC area.

It’s going to be a shame to see a big part of my (any many other Winnipeggers) childhood close for good.
